Often days during the week, when I come home after work, I will be welcomed with my overwhelmingly happy and excited dog named Buddie to greet me at the door. He is a cutie while he wags his tail back and forth like a whip when he sees me.
During the day, when I am away, Buddie has the freedom to roam where he wants and when he wants in the house and outside within bounds when we are with him. One of his greatest anticipation of the day is when I mention "walk?" His ears perk up, his tail starts swaying, and his eyes get big because he knows the highlight of his day is coming.
When we get ready to walk, I put Buddie in a harness and snap the leash. The leash allows me to dictate the direction we will go or not go. It is according to my will that I lead him, though he is with me and near me within a limited range of 10 feet.
The thought hit me, wow, here is Buddie, when on a leash, limited in his freedom in direction and what he can or can not do according to my will, but he is the happiest pup during this time and I for him! Know why, he achieves more freedom than just the bounds of the house when he submits to the leash and I lead him to the outside neighborhood. He can seek, explore and find friends and other treasures that he will not get on his own, in other words his joy increases by submission to my will.
The lesson for me was, I need to get back in the leash and submit and allow the Lord to direct my steps, let him lead and not myself, calling upon and waiting patiently for him(Psalm 37) and his presence in my heart will continue to provide the joy that this world can not fill. He puts those beneficial bounds on my life, for my good, though I may be limited in my own understanding(Proverbs 3:5,6) trust him as the Good Shepherd leadeth his sheep for there is freedom in submission! Amen
